Even though we have printed just about every Pantone PMS color available, this combination remains a top seller. It is followed closely by our white on Kraft – considered the industry best, and the favorite of many green companies and customers.
Why is black ink on kraft such a popular combination?
Here are a few key reasons:
- Whether it is a shipper envelope or a shipper box, a kraft paper or board substrate will always be less expensive compared to white. The black ink provides great contrast on natural kraft color for a very distinct and attractive look.
- White board or paper is usually virgin so kraft, by comparison, can be made of recycled content making it a better option for sustainably minded customers.
- Compared to white, black on kraft e-commerce packaging arrives looking better. It doesn’t show every smudge or scrape endured in shipment, on the box or the printing.

We specialize in problem solving through great structural design of e-commerce packaging. As I have said many times, we are not graphic designers, but after all these years of experience, we have a fairly good idea of what works and what does not. For example, some shades of orange and green simply do not look good on a kraft background. Other, lighter colors like pastels tend to darken and become “muddy” when flexo printed on kraft board, losing some of their “pop”.
