Social shares have become the standard for gauging a company/brand’s influence, reach or visibility online. When your end users are posting content about your packaging, it can have a great impact and generate positive sentiment and get many more eyes on your business. The unboxing experience is not just about creating a positive experience for your customers, although that is certainly the primary objective. It is also about their likelihood to share that experience online and create the coveted viral moments.
Your packaging may be the single greatest marketing tool at your disposal. Use it wisely with these design elements that can help you generate more social shares.
The Importance of Interior Print
It’s been stated before that it’s what’s on the inside that counts. This is especially true of boxes because no matter how much attention is paid to the outside, it will always be an afterthought once the box is opened. The inside is the hidden treasure. The moment of anticipation. The unveiling of the long-awaiting product. Make it count with the bulk of your color/graphics and pop to compliment your product. Use interior printing to create a moment worthy of a social share.

Convey Brand Personality Through Text/Fonts
For ecommerce brands, in the absence of person to person interaction through a retail store, companies have to communicate to their customers in different ways. Their story or mission is often told on their website. Their messaging must be consistent in all of their engagement with their customers, including their product packaging. This can be done effectively, though often subtly by conveying the company personality through the text/font or phrasing used. A fun, witty, humorous brand can use bold, italics, or different-sized text in some areas of the box to tell their customers product directions, or unboxing clues/hints. They can let the customer know where to go for more information in clever, unique ways, and even prompt the end user to share their unboxing experience on various social media platforms. Creativity is key, as long as it is consistent with your brand.
“Layering” the Reveal
This can be very product and project specific, but when appropriate, it can be a very effective strategy to get the most out of an unboxing experience. Layering is a way of increasing the anticipation of the customer from the time the box arrives, to the moment of seeing the product. Sometimes this can be accomplished with tissue or other colorful or decorative void fill. The customer opens the box only to discover that there is another layer to their unboxing still to come, allowing them to take in and notice the specifics of your packaging before they see the product. This can also be achieved with layers of corrugated or paperboard inserts. The most obvious example that comes to mind is when multiple products are packaged and at times we will design inserts with layers or levels with product sitting tucked underneath. This can be great for unboxing, and also serves as protection for the various product components.

Consider these graphic and structural design elements to help boost your customers’ unboxing, and generate those social shares we all want!
