Over the course of 18 years, we have received that response often. Like, why in the world would anyone want to do that? We appreciate the question because since our company started, we have produced millions of die cut mailer style boxes for direct to consumer, e-commerce applications. (See first related post below.) The die cut mailer style of shipping container is by far the most popular because it delivers a great presentation to the customer. However, RSC boxes may be a better option in some applications because they offer some distinct advantages.
When are RSC boxes better for e-commerce?
Die cut boxes require expensive cutting dies. RSC boxes do not. That makes RSCs a better option for shippers who have a diverse product line, and/or a variety of pick and pack shipping configurations.
RSC boxes are preferred in many pick and pack situations because packers can pick directly into the box, rather than picking into a tote or other intermediate container. RSC boxes are quickly erected and formed and are easily closed and sealed.
Printed RSC style boxes.
Perhaps the best thing about RSC boxes is that they are inexpensive to print and brand, inside and outside. Several of our plants have the ability to print both sides of an RSC in one single pass, making branding quite affordable. Even print plates for RSC style boxes are less expensive, compared to die cut mailer print plates.
Printing inside can be a random repeat print as shown in these photos or just printed on the top flaps of the box. Those flaps are sure to be seen when opened and are a great place for a message or a simple thank you.

Why custom print on corrugated boxes? Why not?
If your inventory of die cut mailers is growing and increasingly difficult to manage, it is a good bet that you can utilize fewer RSC boxes to handle your product sizes and order mixes. Another great design option on RSC’s is an adjustable height with the addition of multiple horizontal top scores.
RSC boxes are available in natural kraft (brown) or white board. A common combination is kraft out and white in. That is ideal if you want to print your inside surface with a flood coat or edge to edge print.
If you are just getting started and not sure how your business is going to grow and your product line is going to change, RSC boxes provide the flexibility you need. You can always convert to die cut mailers later, but chances are, you wont want to.
Every customer and application is different.
That is the big problem we have with DIY competitors’ web sites. The fill in the blank approach does not ask the critical questions that may help determine the best option for you.
They do not consider how long you have been in business or even, what does your product look like, weigh, how fragile they are or how many you pack in each box. We try to get to know you, your products, and even your customers. The better we understand your needs, the easier it becomes to service and satisfy them
