No one likes to think of themselves as a beginner, however most of our customers will confess their next package design will be their first. Rather than attempt a DIY project, they choose to work with us because they realize their expertise and experience is focused in other parts of their business. There is no need to have a costly, experienced packaging designer on staff, unless you are creating new packaging on a regular basis.
Conversely, unlike many of our customers, my partner and I are not experts at overseas sourcing. The products most of our customers ship to their domestic DTC customers are manufactured overseas so they are typically well versed on the many details of importing. By comparison, all of the packaging we offer is strictly made in the USA so things like shipping cost, tariffs, lead times, etc. are never a concern. We are also not experts at web marketing and web site building and design. Fortunately, we are able to hire web designers who do have the expertise we are lacking. In short, do what you do best and let someone else help you with the rest.
Structural Design Versus Graphic Design
Simply put, graphic design is the way a package looks. It is all about board color, ink colors, how many colors, different finishes, ink coverage, etc. Structural design is how a package works. It is much more than dimensions. It includes construction, board grade, flute sizes, assembly, and closure. If the application requires an insert to protect and present the product, all of the same questions and concerns would apply. Does it make the process more complicated? Yes, of course, but after millions of boxes created every year, we know how to make it look easy. See first “related post” below.
Experience Makes All the Difference
Some of our customers are graphic designers, or they know a graphic designer they trust to create the visual image they have in mind. In the case of a new company and entrepreneur, it may be a look they have been imagining for years! The only word of caution is that some graphic artists only have experience creating digital images on a web site, such as a web page or logo creation. They are likely not familiar with different types of print processes, inks or substrate types. We can save you time and money by showing you the best and least expensive way to make your design happen.
Who to Trust with Your New Package Design?
It is not an easy decision, but we believe the key is to trust SOMEONE! Of course, we hope you will trust us, but we encourage you to explore options, look at their body of work and how long they have been helping companies achieve their e-commerce packaging objectives.
Call us at 630-551-1700 or contact us to discuss your specific application. A guarantee: you will not lose control of the creative process. In fact, we will require you to review and approve things you have not even thought of. Approvals include board grade, structural sample boxes, ink color swatches and digital proofs, just to name a few. There are no unexpected surprises or delays when you work with us.
