I recently watched a movie titled The Outfit, which was set in 1930, Chicago. During a street scene I noticed the lead character’s business window showed his name and the word BESPOKE. As a fan of brevity, and a lover of old, unusual words I had to do some digging. A web search resulted in a long list of definitions including tailored, adapted, and modified. The best definition I found is “custom made”. In the movie it was custom made suits for men. In our case it is custom-made boxes.

Why Bespoke Packaging?
Sustainable E-commerce packaging – First and foremost, much like the suits the lead movie character made sure the “fit” was perfect. Oversized packaging results in material waste and there is nothing eco-friendly about that. Recipient customers are quick to notice when a shipper box is much larger than it has to be.

Economical E-commerce packaging – Oversized packaging results in oversized pricing. The pricing for any corrugated shipping container is determined by the number of square inches of corrugated board used so the smaller the box, the lower the price. Don’t forget outbound shipping cost is always calculated using “dimensional weight” by all shippers including UPS, USPS and FedEx. Regardless of who is paying shipping, a smaller box is certain to be less expensive to ship.
Protective E-commerce packaging – Our goal when sizing boxes or protective packaging is to immobilized the product(s) being shipped to prevent or minimize the possibility of damage. If a person with a size 9 foot decides to wear a size 11 shoe, the foot will fit, but they are likely to end up with callouses, and sores. If any product has room to move within the box, the possibility of internal or “product to
product” damage is increased substantially. We all know how expensive it is to replace damaged product, not to mention the negative customer impression and disappointing unboxing experience.
As consumers, we all notice when a shipper uses packaging that is not quite right for the product. How many of us have complained about a Target, Staples, or Amazon shipment that was embarrassingly oversized for the product being shipped. You can almost forgive them because they ship millions of packages every month. However, you/we can not use that excuse and we have time and resources to do it right.
When I mention resources, I am including companies like ours who have the tools and experience to minimize the size of your packaging. That pays dividends in so many different ways, including most important of all, customer satisfaction.
